The Maldives, also officially the Republic of Maldives, is an island nation consisting of 26 atolls. It is about 600 miles southwest of India in the Arabian Sea of the Indian Ocean. It has about 500,000 inhabitants. As its average elevation is about 5 feet above sea level, it is the world's lowest-lying country.
