Japan 9.2 Earthquake - March 11, 2011
From Tokyo to Narita, March 11th & 12th. Had just left Hotel New Otani at 2:30 pm in a private vehicle to catch my AA flight back to Chicago. 2:46 pm the quake struck. Car had just rolled to a stop before getting on the expressway to pay a toll. During the quake, if felt like I was in a small boat on a lake with 35 mph winds whipping up the waves. Rocked back and forth real good for about 3 minutes. After the quake was over, we moved on for about another 15 minutes when the expressway came to a dead stop in both directions. Saw some mud and water on the pavement. Not sure, but speculate that high water level from the Tsunami (timing would be about right) backed up storm water drains along the expressway ahead of us and flooded out the road. Police turned us around and directed us off the expressway and on to the side roads. Those roads were packed, and it took until 9:30 pm to get to Narita vicinity. By then knew that the airport was closed, and was lucky to find a hotel room, possibly the last available (iPhone made communications possible via spotty cell, Skype and SMS connections. Won't leave home without it!). Made it back to the airport Saturday morning, and was able to get back to Chicago via Shanghai on Sunday. So sad for my friends who live in Japan.
