The city is the capital of India, and has a population of 17 million people. Delhi has been continuously inhabited since the 6th century BCE. Old Delhi is part of the greater city of Delhi, and was founded as a walled city named Shahjahanabad in 1639. By contrast, New Delhi was founded in 1911 by Emporor George V and was designed by British architects.
